Tips from a New Yorker: Maureen Kelly of Tarte Cosmetics

November 21st, 2012

As one of Paula Hermanny’s favorite places to visit, New York is often in her thoughts, especially as the city attempts to recover from the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy.  It was only recently that Paula and her daughter, Sofia, had taken a mother-daughter trip to the Big Apple for Sofia’s birthday.

Since it was Sofia’s first time to NYC, the need for insider tips from a real city expert was in order.  Thankfully, ViX had gathered some insight from New Yorker and Tarte Cosmetics Founder, Maureen Kelly.  Maureen graciously offered her own city guide cheat sheet  (and shared a bit about a journey of her own).

From mother to mother, what is the best way to spend a day in the city with your kids?

My boys have a ton of energy, so I love taking them to Central Park where they can run around and stop in at the zoo—it’s like a little treasure tucked away in the middle of the park. Then, we like to pop over to FAO Schwarz where the kids can play with everything. It’s a toy store where things aren’t off limits. They can spend hours in there!

Don’t forget to pack/bring…

An extra pair of flats—no matter what, you’ll do a ton of walking and it’s important to be comfortable…especially chasing after kids!

A must-stop for city eats….

Koi and Catch are both my go-to restaurants—I’m a big fan of sushi and seafood and these two places do it right. Everything on the menu is delicious.

The city’s best-kept secret is…

This vintage shop called Shareen. It’s literally in an apartment where you get served wine (who doesn’t love that?). The owner hangs a dress outside when she’s open—such a great spot for vintage pieces.

An unforgettable NYC experience includes…

Strolling the highline—it’s an awesome public park that was built on a historic freight rail line and it’s elevated above the streets. It’s really one-of-a-kind with great views and very New York.

You traveled to the Amazon recently, what makes it so special for Tarte’s natural makeup philosophy?

We discovered one of our powerhouse ingredients, Amazonian clay, which is in so many of our products there! We support cooperatives in the Rainforest and have a great relationship with them. As a socially responsible company, tarte cares about the environment, and we’re always looking for ways to help reduce environmental waste with sustainable packaging, create eco-chic reusable components and offer unique customer recycling initiatives.
