On Paula’s Coffee Table

January 30th, 2013

There’s a sunny little space in ViX designer Paula Hermanny’s La Jolla home. Motes of dust dance in the light and everything else is still and peaceful. An overstuffed sofa with pillows of worn burlap serves as an invitation to sit down.  A coffee table stands opposite, aged with character and smartened with solid inlay. Sunlight lands on a stack of books, each is hardcover and weighted with reams of inspiration. To open one, is to gain insight into the working mind of the host: what affects, what drives, what is important to learn and remember.  A designer ...

Sounds of Rio Bossa Nova

January 28th, 2013

No rhythm is more expresssive than Rio Bossa Nova and this is one of the few musical genres very close to ViX designer Paula Hermanny's heart. Lilting and infectious, bossa nova emerged in the 1950’s, evolving from samba and shaped heavily by the influence of jazz. Bossa nova—or, “new trend”—gained massive popularity and was enjoyed well into the 60’s. It won fan followings of legendary musicians, such as Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald. To this day, bossa nova remains a musical phenomenon in its own right, influencing present day performers outside of its country of ...

It's All in the Details

January 25th, 2013

ViX designer Paula Hermanny knows that it is the small things that matter.  A bit of extra care or even a minute detail can lend itself as a singular defining element.  After all, that may be all it takes for something to go from ordinary to unforgettable.

“Everything is in the details.  Details set you apart from all the rest and I keep this in mind when designing,” Paula says.

And she's right.  This underlying theme is what sets ViX apart from the rest: 24K gold plated hardware, leather accents, embroidery and craftsmanship.  Having a trained eye to spot ...

Art in the House of Hermanny

January 23rd, 2013

An elegant woman, poised, paintbrush in hand.

Sculptures, hand shaped and formed, tangible in beauty.

A canvas of reclaimed wood, white boats painted like those in Capri.

These vivid impressions were ViX designer Paula Hermanny’s earliest memories of art.  Her continued fascination and appreciation for art grew from youthful preoccupation to full manifestation through her present day designs. She credits her paternal grandmother, Joana, for unlocking the world of art for her early on.

“She was a born artist,” Paula explained, citing that Joana had lived in Europe, immersed in a continent steeped in art.  “She did everything! She ...

Paula’s Pick: the Pashmina

January 18th, 2013

Inside ViX Designer Paula Hermanny’s closet, scarves and pashminas are as ubiquitous as purses and shoes.  Besides inheriting a love of textiles from her grandmothers, Paula is also able to see the potential in a single square of wool.

“They’re an easy way to bring color to a basic outfit,” she explains.  Praising the versatility of the pashmina, Paula goes on to mention how convenient they are for travel.  They provide warmth in lieu of a scratchy airline blanket, can be worn during any season and can often be worn with any outfit.

True to her taste, Paula ...

Cruise 2013 Behind the Collection: Cape Navy

January 17th, 2013

“I LOVE this print—it’s so fun! One of my favorites for sure!”

ViX designer Paula Hermanny is raving about the Cape Navy, of course.  The daring animal print-on-print motif is a standout from the Cruise 2013 Collection.  African-inspired, the Cape Navy pays tribute to the exciting, urban edge of Cape Town, South Africa.  Indigo zebra stripes bordered by tawny cheetah print toes the line between brash and daring.  One thing is for certain, the Cape Navy Bliss dress or bikini is sure to garner some attention.

Confident in her abiding taste, Paula, herself, donned the Cape Navy bliss ...

Paula On: Yoga

January 15th, 2013

“Yoga is such a huge part of my routine,” ViX designer Paula Hermanny says, “I try to do it every morning.”

Besides the benefits of proper breathing and muscle toning, the practice of yoga gives Paula a special moment for introspection.  In her quiet solitude, she is able to meditate and reconnect with her center.  This blend of physical exercise, reflection and breathing provides the perfect start to Paula’s day.

Even while traveling, Paula refuses to stray from her routine.  When packing for a recent trip to Costa Rica, the first item that went into her suitcase was a ...

Snapshots: Paula in Costa Rica

January 11th, 2013

Ever since the first time ViX designer Paula Hermanny set foot in Costa Rica, she promised herself that she would return as many times as she could.  The sultry locale, rustic beaches and pura vida lifestyle had instantaneously secured a place in her heart.

“I love Costa Rica, it’s amazing,” Paula exclaims, “the kids love it and we just go to the beach all day, having fun.  I feel so relaxed there!”

She goes to Santa Teresa, bringing family and friends, focused on spending quality time with them and—of course—herself.  She begins each morning with yoga and ...

Like Mother, Like Daughter

January 9th, 2013

“Mom, can you make ViX clothes for me?”

That was the special request that started it all.  ViX designer Paula Hermanny’s daughter, Sofia, wanted to look just like her mother.

“Every suit I have, Sofia wants it,” Paula says, “She always wants the same one.”

In 2007, Sofia got her wish.  Paula launched Bambino so that her daughter and other little girls would have something to wear to the beach.   Echoing the ViX signature style, the children’s swimwear line offers bikinis and one-pieces with the same quality and stylishness.  This season, Bambino has now evolved into ViX Girls ...

Paula On: Beauty

January 7th, 2013

ViX designer Paula Hermanny will be the first to admit that make-up is not her forte.  In a world where painted faces are more common than not, Paula’s effortless look is as refreshing as her beauty philosophy: "keep it simple."  For her, a rigorous skincare ritual, a dose of confidence and the occasional touch of color is all one would need to radiate natural beauty.

So how does this beach loving Brasilian minimalist stay so fresh faced and polished?  A stealthy peek into her bathroom reveals Paula’s must have beauty products:

2013 Resolutions - The ViX Version

January 3rd, 2013

It is 2013 and the New Year brings with it the opportunity to start fresh and anew, wipe the slate clean and set new goals.  To actually reach those goals, we share the following tips:  make them attainable; start with small steps; use a positive spin as opposed to a negative one—for example, instead of having the resolution “this year, I will not eat sweets,” try instead, “I will eat healthier this year.”  Break that down further into something like, “Each day, I will include vegetables in at least two of my meals.”  This keeps things simple, realistic and ...
