Sunday Strolling in Solana

February 1st, 2013

About thirty minutes north of San Diego is the beautiful, seaside community of Solana Beach.  The neighborhood is home to South Cedros Avenue, a strip perfect for window-shopping during a lazy, afternoon stroll.  Known for its selection of unique home goods, Solana boasts a “Cedros Avenue Design District.”  It is heaven on earth for new homeowners and interior designers.

“ I love Solana Beach,” ViX designer Paula Hermanny says, “I think it’s amazing and I’ve bought two nightstands from there—it’s dark wood and you can see the grain.  It’s so natural looking, which I love!”  It’s almost a guarantee that you will fall in love with something in Solana.  Walking through the “Cedros Avenue” archway immediately transports you to a street lined with shops and cafes.

The striking Leaping Lotus, a bi-level structure of glass and aged copper, will catch your attention, but not long after you enter its treasure trove of novelties and décor.  Products range from the locally crafted to exotic imports, and vintage wonders to contemporary designs.  Further ahead is David Alan Collection, offering a selection of rustic, wood furniture and art.  Artist and globetrotter David Alan, himself, curates each piece during his travels to Far East Asia.   Across the street is Cassidy Interiors, offering custom designed furniture crafted by artisans in Mexico.  The home accents, furniture and art selection compliments any home with a Hacienda, Tuscan or Mediterranean aesthetic.

Sprinkled throughout Cedros Avenue are numerous other stops for meandering weekenders.  The Village on Cedros is a little square surrounded by fashion and jewelry boutiques, a specialty food store and even a spa.  Another few steps take you to quaint, community gardens, also fun to wander around in for your own gardening ideas.

When it’s time for refreshments, head to one of several cafes, such as Cedros Café next to Leaping Lotus or Zinc—a place hard to miss due to its rather verdant exterior.  Relax under the shade of hanging ivy and sip on the Zinc Sunrise, a refreshing, must-try concoction of orange, peach and raspberry juice.   Take your time and soak up the tranquility of Solana.  Afterwards, continue on your adventure for further inspiration from this notable design district of San Diego County!
