Paula On: Holiday Hosting

December 20th, 2013

Few things in life are as pleasurable as gathering dear friends and family around the table. Enhance the experience with some holiday hosting tips from Paula—a well set table and carefully decorated home are almost always synonymous with a succesful get-together!

Tip #1: Less is more.

Default to a clean and simple aesthetic when it comes to décor.  Better to focus on a few essential things than to re-design an entire room for the sake of a single party. Giving serious thought to the menu, libations and music will anchor your efforts to the elements that make or break an evening!

Tip #2: Let them expect the unexpected.

What are you known for?  If you are the resident “foodie” in your group, introduce your friends to a new kind of dish or hors d’oeuvre.  Have you just come back from somewhere exotic?  Teach your guests a new custom or share a cultural tidbit from your adventures abroad!

Tip #3: Personalize.

Remember that you are throwing the party, so don’t be afraid to inject some of your personality into the décor. For Paula, she likes to showcase a collection of handmade serving dishes that come in the shape of fish.  Her favorite flowers are orchids and she will usually have fresh, white blossoms as part of the table setting.

Tip #4:  Get creative.

The juxtaposition of porcelain and basket-weave, etched glass and linen, or vibrant colors and muted neutrals, all lend themselves as talking points for your guests. These details also add to the experience--don’t forget that people eat with their eyes, as well!

Tip #5: Exude calmness.

Guests will take their cue from the hostess, so be sure to relax and smile! While you are responsible for everyone’s general enjoyment, be sure to allow yourself to have fun. The more comfortable you are, the more comfortable your guests will be!
